This whole thing is dumb.
Punching a dude over a steak is dumb. Paying millions to suspend someone for it is dumb. You don't have to keep him working there if you don't want, but for the queen's sake, don't yank all that valuable footage away and shoot yourself in the foot in the process. Send the producer on vacay, have a temp or another producer or whatever finish the job, wrap up the season and clip the contract or kill the show even, if that's what you want.

This got me thinking... what would a good/reasonable response/punishment be? Well I have a couple of thoughts on that...
Clarkson is *told* to say sorry, give the producer 50,000 pounds and is required to bring the producer a steak dinner. Ummm... on second thought, the last thing might be a bad idea because I bet Clarkson might spit in it... or worse.
No more meals brought to Clarkson anymore by any BBC employee. He will have to order his meals himself, pick up the food on his own or hire his own lackey.
A public statement, written in the Clarkson style, that he has to read publicly that would be something like "I recently acted like a big, dumb ape by punching one of the producers for not getting my steak dinner quickly enough. I am sorry. I apologize to this producer and to everyone at the BBC for attracting this negative attention through my ridiculous and unacceptable actions. I will never hit any BBC employee ever again and will never hit anyone again over something so minor and stupid. "

Oh, no doubt. He should be in trouble for hitting somebody. Not cool. But the Beeb is only hurting themselves with this one. They should have figured out how to handle this privately and levy a large fine or something (if that's possible). Hurt Clarkson in the pocketbook.
